This march calls for real, tangible changes in the rights of trans and intersex people, beyond performative gestures.
Our rights are not guaranteed, and questioning them often leads to even darker ideologies. Conservative groups have been undermining LGBT+ rights for years, and Belgium, home to the EU’s capital, faces these same challenges. Our communities continue to experience:
- Discrimination and limited access to healthcare, with pathologized transitions;
- Financial insecurity due to unequal access to housing and employment;
- Verbal and physical violence in public and daily life;
- Stigmatizing transphobic discourse in mainstream media, often without consequences;
- A rising acceptance of nationalist ideologies that harass our communities and threaten the legal recognition of our identities.
Organizing this protest required negotiating with local police, fundraising through a support party, and engaging with the press through interviews and a press kit. A manifesto was written, and the event was promoted at community gatherings. Volunteers were trained to handle transphobic incidents, and security was provided by a local queer boxing club. Accessibility was prioritized with cars available for those unable to walk the full route.
The protest caught the attention of Belgium’s Secretary of State for Gender Equality.
